back at deis
Jan. 11th, 2003 10:02 pmI'm back on campus today. Once again I missed seeing my folks due to travel mismatches. Their flight was to land at about 9:50pm, and I had to set out by about 2pm to get here before dark. I don't mind highway driving in the dark so much; the more significant issue was that I needed to arrive in time to get enough sleep for Hebrew School tomorrow morning. Waiting until 10:30 to leave (estimating in travel time from the airport, plus luggage-collection allotment, this is when I'd expect them to reach home) would mean I don't arrive at Brandeis until midnight -- but only if I don't spend any time talking to my parents. Just not going to work out.
They should be landing about now, in fact. I also missed my mother's return from her conference in London, because she arrived in the afternoon of the same day in whose morning I left for New York City.
One of the things that I got done while I was home was to copy all the music off my old computer so I can transfer it to my current one. It neatly fills 2 CDs, and I am so glad to have them. Ahh, I had forgotten some of the great stuff I had there!
On the subject of computers, I also set up a router and installed the software so that our house's network now exists. It wasn't much -- "setting up" the router essentially consisted of plugging it in, and a bit of cord-shuffling. But I was proud of me anyway, mostly because my mom was depending on me for it. Also I found and eventually solved a weird problem in which my mother's machine refused to connect to the network over a wired connection. She didn't like my work-around (buy an other wireless reciever). Heheh. Ima was convinced that calling Dell was the best way to get help, even though I said it was pretty clearly a software issue, so after I had been stumped for a couple days I tried calling their tech support. They had me on hold for an hour and a half before transferring me to another dept where I fell right back into the hold-queue. Glory! On the other hand, I did invent a workable method for attaching our cordless phone to my head as a result. :-) And while on hold the second time, I fixed the problem.
Method for using cordless phone hands-free:
> find the pair of old black tights that you cut apart one day while bored, possibly with the vauge plan of converting them into fingerless gloves.
> drop phone handpiece down one leg of them. it slides beautifully along and comes to rest with the mouthpiece at the toe.
> wrap other end of tights-leg around head, tieing it onto itself so that the earpiece is suspended just by your ear. no other scarf is necessary to stabilize it if you do this just right.
And if you use nylons, you'll still be able to see the buttons!
In other news, I will be having an independent study this coming semester with the professor who teaches the Cognitive Modelling class I took last semester. This is very good news!
