Medford

The first Krispy Kreme in Massachusetts opened yesterday or today. I've already mentioned my thoughts on the cult of the Kreme donut in the other post. It was big news that it opened. It was being talked about all over. My friend Victoria was going with her housemate to get donuts, so she couldn't come for ice-cream with Mira and me. That made me think, perhaps I should go too. For sure it would be crowded, but perhaps I could lay to rest my wonder about the possibilities of an un-glazed Krispy Kreme donut. Yes -- the perfect opportunity, why not?
Mira agreed, even though she was on a diet of avoiding carbos for a while.
First, we got delicious dessert smoothies at Tom Can Cook, then headed off to Medford on the directions given to us by a Brandeis grad student who was there for the good-bye party of some grad association big person.
The day was just lovely --- starting to turn into evening, and gorgeous. Still a bit too hot (providing the impetus for ice-cream), but OK in a car with the air moving. I had a great time! We drove past Alewife, and I managed the crazy rotary with familiarity. Recognized intersections as we crossed Mass Ave, and then more. Ok, so we got lost in the center of Medford a bit, but new directions fixed that problem, and we finally made it to where the store is.

We almost couldn't locate the building, and we were ready to call it a fun adventure and go home again, when Mira found the sign. There were so many cars! Police officers were directing traffic, and a man made me say if I was going drive-thru or inside. The drive-thru lane circled the whole parking lot, so they needed to direct me then. (Of course we were planning to eat in. You can't get the feel of a place via drive-thru.)
There was a tent, too, outside the building, and it was filled with junk you could buy: T-shirts, and hats, etc. Free paper caps, like the workers would wear, and I asked for one of those. Mira wasn't going to bother, since we weren't going in.
Yeah, the line was too long, and we decided we didn't want donuts that bad. To find the place had already been a great evening. Medford is farther out than I had known. I ascertained that they do offer some "cake" donuts, meaning un-glazed, so my question was settled too. --- Secretly, it seems to me that anyone who calls their normal donuts "cake donuts" is not to be trusted with normal donuts.

The store was pretty neat to look at, with all the machines going. And it really felt like a little carnival or fair there, with all the people and lines and chattering. My guess is the party will die down by the end of a week from now. The cult-itude of these providers scares me... which inclues calling the foodstuffs simply "Krispy Kreme"s, with no real noun supporting them. I state Dunkin Donuts should stay strong, not piddle about kow-towing to these new-come imports. That's what I have to say about that. It was a really fun spontaneous trip.
