My birthday
Feb. 22nd, 2011 03:55 amIt is nearing the end of my birthday day. I plan to go to sleep soon, but a quick post seems in order.
Staying up until a bit past midnight last night, I began collecting birthday greetings early! Thanks, Gilly, Jonathon, & Lisa (by txt). I found (& replied to) several facebook "happy birthday"s, and went to bed. I logged in again this evening, and the list of Facebook Wall-post notifications is *long* in my inbox! I'd say all but three bithday email messages were from Facebook Wall. I'm both gratified to be greeted by so many friends, and surprised to see such a Facebook-centric pattern, since I have barely any active presence on the site. (Maybe it's the lack of an LJ post today, to hang comments on...)
(The actual reading of the messages will have to wait until tomorrow or so. I will savor them!)
So, the summary: I started the day in NYC, sleeping over Danielle's apartment with Jonathon & Gilly for Rachela & Gedalia's wedding, which had been the evening before. As mentioned, I got midnight well-wishes --- and a song :-)
Slept pretty well. When I woke up Gilly & Jonathon told me to look out the window. My eyes still covered in sheet, I tried guessing why. Gilly nearly had me convinced there was a unicorn (Yes! Oh wait, no."). Snow! A tall, fluffy coating of fresh snow on everything --- so pretty! *And* light enough not to be a nuisance on the ground. "Thanks, guys! You did a great job!"
Then we packed & set the apartment aright. (Some of that work was completed after brunch.)
Brunch at "Organic Nibbles" on Flatbush. I picked this place because it had comfy looking seats. Those did not disappoint. :-) Food was tasty & had fun names. The service wasn't good. Gilly had to wait for her apparently-forgotten coffee. There *was* only one counter-guy, but on the other hand for much of the time we were the only customers to be served. He could have done much better. Oddly, he didn't even call out when our orders were up, on the counter. ("Are my fries up yet?") Aside from the coffee delay it was all Ok, though.
Hilary and Gilly both composed poems on my communal birthday card. Gilly's rhymed, and Hilary's was haiku.
After brunch, Gilly & I found and stopped in "Blue Apron" specialty food store. It smelled deliciously of cheese. I ogled & sniffed lots of cheeses, until the counter-guy ("Ben"?) asked if I wanted help. Gilly told him it was my birthday and we needed a cheese for the ride back to Boston. He gave us some good advice --- and lots of sample tastes. We picked out a Stilton (Roaring 40s blue was a close second). Jonathon was patient. We got a loaf of crusty bread, too --- by which I mean Gilly, because they wouldn't let me pay. I did manage to sneak a 65c purchase of a caramel lolipop (um, Dutch-flavored?) on my own dime. At the end of the trip, Gilly got the remaining bread and half the remaining cheese, so I don't feel like took too much advantage.
We had way too many bags to bring out of Danielle's, but we did it.
An impatient car came up behind us as I was arranging the last things & getting in, which led to some unfortunate flailing & grumpiness. But eventually we were all settled, and Jonathon drove us home.
I read a scanty number of pages in some work doc, napped, and ate cheese+bread with Gilly. The we did the cross-word from the print-version Onion. I still get a kick out of snagging the print-version. Mostly I worked the crossword because it was getting dark in the back seat. Then Gilly and Jonathon joined in the out-loud review of missing words. We solved it.
Thruout the ride, Gilly managed admirable sincerity in attributing various things to my birthday. I lapped it up. Jonathon has a great grin when he points out that this is my birthday.
After arriving home, Jonathon give me his card & gift that had been waiting: a framed original from Skin Horse, featuring Tigerlilly Jones 'cause he knows she's one of my favorite characters.
